I think that most people actually DO care about about "brandwagon" activity, or at least they perceive it in a negative fashion. For the luminaries like us pulling the levers, it may be a conscious reaction but the typical consumer does feel it and it likely feels icky.
It would be interesting to leverage social listening to study this phenomena: more harm than good? Neutral? Building on your point though, I doubt it's overwhelmingly positive, so then what's the point? Noise.
Whether good or bad, I think the attention alone and the small amount of effort required will keep these types of things going. Sigh. Saddest thing was that Gritty, the mascot of the Flyers, didn't take part. He's already orange.
